I'm reading Tinker by Wen Spencer, which is a fun little Bordertown type of story, like a mash-up of Cast in Shadow and Finder.
But.

everybody wants her.
And it would appear to me these characters are highly specific tastes.
But that's not the end issue.

She likes everyone, too.

Now I know not everyone is into burning bridges, but I'm not sure how many 18-year-old girl virgins are really so into all the guys that are into them. In my experience (personal feelings, sure, but also how my girlfriends have acted) is that there's the one guy you like and everyone else is a pest.
Maybe two are okay. But being flattered by come-ons by a handful of them? Not so much!

How is that Mary-Sue attractive?
Anyway. I don't understand why I've seen this so many times.

Wen Spencer be female my dear :) Tinker is okay but I enjoy her other books like Alien Taste far more.

Ah!
Well, she had me fooled, because I swear I see that in other places.

Sorry, that was me.

I was on my way to edit the post (since I forgot the second half) anyway, so I've cut my losses. >,<

But I know I have seen this with male authors, and I still wonder about it.

I recently read King's Property by Morgan Howell. There was something off about the main female character, but couldn't figure out what it was. Then I read the copyright page and determined that Morgan Howell is most definitely male and it explained everything :D

Some guys should leave well enough alone. ^_^

Ah well. I'm glad no one can dictate I can't write males, either. Though I am trying to do it well, I really am!
